Relaxed ’70s AM folk rock whose smoothness belies often confrontational lyrics about the state of the union. Like Bill Callahan, Kurt Vile, the kind of stuff that’s bound to become quality dad rock someday. Play it all and play it often. FCCs on 2 and 8. 1. (5:00) *** Bum Bum Bum—Mid-tempo, loping, warm slide guitar and bass, about the U.S. military-industrial complex 2. (4:22) Rancid Girl—FCC “fuck”. Raw vocals, rough unadorned electric guitar, like Lou Reed 3. (5:18) ** Laughter is the Best Medicine—Serene layers of acoustic guitar, flute, trumpet, quasi-reggae Protestant worship jam 4. (4:15) ** Opposite House—Clean guitars, background vox from Angel Olsen, lush and satisfied, darker in second half 5. (4:55) **** Medusa’s Outhouse—Yearning Americana. Stand-out falsetto, descending bass, spoken word and electric guitar passage. “If it’s so easy, you try.” 6. (6:02) ** Low Flyin’ Bird—12-string guitar. Lyrics indistinguishable in Spanish at first. Soaring, cresting, passionately vocal-driven, gliding piano and guitar riffs in closing 7. (4:45) Cry—More anthemic, haunting whispering almost spoken vocals, intense lyrics, Springsteen 8. (5:52) **** Run Sister Run—FCC "shit". Latin dance groove, urgent, lyrics about women’s reproductive rights 9. (3:16) ** In a Chinese Alley—Chiming guitars, pensive, spoken somewhat buried vocals, raw electric fills and synths later 10. (5:12) *** It—Unsettlingly slow and deliberate guitars, shoegazey, choral intro, melancholy but slowly becomes more gleaming 11. (4:14) ** Switch—Smooth aquatic bass, wah-wah pedal, like a folkier Holydrug Couple 12. (6:08) * I’m a Shoe—Slow, shadowy, elegiac doom; seems like the narrative of an exile |
