“Meet the Humans” Steve Mason
Steve Mason is a Scottish singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist whose music embraces electro-pop, rock and even some indie folk. Mason was a founding member of The Beta Band and performed with that group until it folded in the mid 2000s. He released his first solo album under his own name in 2010. “Meet the Humans” is his third solo album and has received excellent reviews. Give it a listen!

Recommended: 1, 9, 6, 2, 11, 10. No FCCs detected.

1. (3:48) Water Bored — Catchy electro-pop with a serious message. Shuffling beat, pounded piano and rich backing vocals. ****
2. (4:17) Alive — Bouncy and smooth rock with an infectious rhythm. Great Melodica solos by Mason. ***
3. (4:49) Alright — Fuzzy, grungy rock with an orchestra (or synth) way in the background.
4. (3:46) Another Day — Swinging and melodic tune. Shakers. Bells and horns added over the syncopated beat.
5. (3:49) Run Away — Softer, melancholy ballad over strummed guitar and piano.
6. (4:15) To a Door — Carefree folk-rock. Guitar. Piano. Handclaps. The vocals and orchestral backing are reminiscent of the Moody Blues in places. ****
7. (5:18) Hardly Go Through — Repeated pulsing keyboards, airy vocals and soaring soundscapes.
8. (4:51) Through my Window — Slower, plodding. Melody is carried by simple piano and guitar chords played in unison. Vocals are distant and indistinct.
9. (4:18) Planet Sizes — Fast-paced electro-rock. Urgent and intense. Rapidly played keyboards and strummed guitar — building into a soaring anthem that’s something like Shearwater. ****
10. (4:02) Like Water — Uplifting, mid-tempo piano ballad — supported by strings. ***
11. (4:59) Words in my Head — Trip-hop-infused, funky closer. Swirling, somewhat atmospheric electro pop-rock. ***
