On his second full-length, The Range (James Hinton) digs the humanity out of the sea of
technology around us. Chopping up Youtube samples, vlogs, and other bites of the Internet,
Hinton triumphs in creating a collage of touching, organic vocals embedded in rich, danceable
electronic tracks. A phenomenal follow up to his acclaimed Nonfiction, Potential exudes a feeling
optimism throughout all of its tracks. A humbling record that left me feeling like I did at the end
of Jamie xx’s In Colour. The world is huge place with so much… potential.

Favorite Tracks: 2, *3*, 6, 9, 11

1. (3:20) Regular – Slow, Spoken, sad vocal sample, uncertainty, quiet ghostly vocals in background
2. (3:45) Copper Wire* – pitched down soul sample, plodding dance track, pretty sparkling synths
3. (3:26) Florida*** – YES! Play this track! Upbeat, twinkling blips, steel drum! Drop at 1:00
4. (2:45) Superimpose – Slowly building, hip hop drums, swirling piano cycles in background
5. (3:53) Five Four* – Slow, cool piano loops, a nice sampled rap verse compliments the track
6. (3:15) Falling Out of Phase** – Crunchy synths with atmospheric, bouncing blips, almost a ballad, slow
7. (4:14) No Loss – Slow building, high tension, but no explosion, ripe for a good remix
8. (3:45) Skeptical – Looped vocal sample, nice track, pretty similar to previous
9. (3:46) Retune* – cycling piano, upbeat, chopped vocals harmonize into sick track
10. (3:33) So – cool violin sample with looped “So”, rolling housy bass action,
11. (4:32) 1804* – upbeat, glitchy backbeat, piano, funny, accented samples
