Quiet, emotionally restrained, atmospheric folk. Guitars, a male and a female voice, and snazzy use of the wood block. The strongest part of this album is definitely the rhythms: off-balance, lilting, but always gentle, occasionally punctuated by a tap from a drum or a pulse from a bass guitar. It’s the sort of music that puts you in a thoughtful mood.

The first half of the EP is more traditional folk; the second is quiet folky dance music. I preferred the second half.

No FCCs. My favorites: 5, 4

1) “Heaven’s Gate” (3:09): A bit less traditional than it first appears, but still pretty traditional. Nice melody. Emphasis on the vocals.
2) “We Come and Go” (4:05): Slower. Almost blusey. Pronounced bass.
3) “Book of Dreams” (2:26): Cheerful. The closing song of an indie family comedy.
4) “Crying Out Loud” (3:15): The wood block and guitar picking are great here. Just female singer.
5) “I Hear a Calling” (3:18): More of a Spanish feel. Guitar picking, more wood block. Intricate, lilting rhythm. Clicking and clacking add a nice sharpness. 6/8 time. Great instrumental final minute.
