INSTRUMENTAL FUNK/R&B
Chelsey Green plays violin and does most of the composing. (There are a few covers.) Accompaniment ranges from just piano & drums to big band with guitar, horns, strings, etc. Some tunes are quite good; some just sound odd with violin as the lead. RIYL Tower of Power or AWB from the 70s.
No FCC issues
1 ** Very fast, funky, energetic. Violin melody is compelling. Strong start to album. (2:54)
2 Mid-tempo. More orchestral, less groovin' than #1. (4:59)
3 * Mid-slow. Pretty R&B love ballad with violin lead rather than a voice. (3:59)
4 Slow. Another ballad. This one is a bit too schmaltzy. (6:42)
5 Slow then faster. Popular jazz standard. Green sings (the only vocal). Ok, not great. (6:18)
6 Mid-tempo. Kind of bland. Can’t tell why it’s called “Party Song.” (5:11)
7 * Slow. Little bit mysterious; little bit jazzy. Late-night mellow. (5:18)
8 Mid-tempo. It’s tough to follow Coltrane; she probably shouldn’t have tried. (5:37)
9 ** Slow. Lush & lovely. Despite the title, it’s two long, legato, arco sections with a short pizzicato bridge in the middle. Mainly violin, piano & drums. Powerful & moving. (4:50)
10 Slow. Somber, stately hymn; a bit plodding. Violin & piano only. (4:37)
