label compilation, all over the place in genre and quality. i enjoyed this. best when it diverges from the indie rock sound that dominates the album—but even these tracks have some experimental touches that help the album work as a whole. riyl is useless here, probably a track for everyone.
***1. rudimentary beat crunching over static, bass line and far-away synth, all over an amazing and acerbic bukowski poem read by the author. would make a weird, excellent beginning or ending for a show.
2. droney, monotone vocals over peppy and emphatic drum, bright guitar. complex bass work.
3. heavy rock riff with snotty vocals, harmony vocalizing. possible FCC (“fuck”) but way too distorted to be sure. ends with weird liquid gurgling.
***4. acoustic guitar, moody male and female vocals. driven by persistent bass drum kick. i’m into the bass mini-solo at 1:00 and 2:00.
5. quick and quiet acoustic, strokes-ish raspy vocals. shimmering guitar and double-tracked vocals for a triumphant chorus.
***6. shakers and a gospel-ish beat/riff (?). repetitive two-chord guitar. slightly sour male and choral female vocals. really weird.
7. ass-shaking guitar and handclap drums. instrumental track. some metallic swooshes in last minute.
8. apathetic, millennial garage punk. excellent solo around 1:30—distorted, sloppy guitar punctuated by very quick chord changes.
9. hip-hop track out of nowhere. starts with loud horns that sound like a dead kennedys interlude. FCC (pussy). beat relies on same throbbing horns.
10. acoustic guitar and theremin, flaming lips vibes. compelling beat introduced at 0:40, built on inhaling sounds. beware the false ending at 3:35—comes back in ten seconds later.
11. big, queens of the stone age alternative sound, with gentle and cooing male vocals. time signature change at 2:40, ends abruptly.
12. another, better hip-hop track with akil the mc of jurassic 5. basic boombap, scratches and vocalizing female soul sample. clean except for vague sexual metaphor (“hit the mic doggy style”).
13. indie love song. tambourine and organ heavy, interesting touches with the keys but not a lot going on.
14. surfy teen-rock beat (you’ll know when you hear it), piano, and guitar feedback waves. melancholy and slow.
***15. 16-minutes, sounds like a suite. windy ambient, super-slowed-down string samples. changes entirely at 3:40 to a more structured synth riff over a cinematic string beat. shifts again at 5:30 to low synths pattern, sub bass wash and glass bottle percussion.
