REVOLUTIONARY SNAKE ENSEMBLE: Live Snakes
Accurate, 2014
MODERN-JAZZ BRASS BAND – Gotta love this group, which takes the happy/funky New Orleans brass band sound and launches it into postbop and avant-jazz territory. Fear not, the rock-solid drumming keeps the band firmly in the pocket even when the horns get weird and scrungy (which they do a lot), and a great time is had by all. Yippee!!
All good stuff. Fo’s picks: 1-6, 12
1. 5:46 – catchy party drum groove: saxes riff and spar against each other
2. 8:00 – sneaky and snaky: winds ‘round a steady beat, trumpet & sax blare
3. 4:17 – old gospel tune stomps into raucous free-jazz & loose ensemble play
4. 3:46 – quick jabbing groove falls apart, returns, saxes box, 2-flute improv
5. 6:41 – effects-heavy bass sets up an exotic, warped version of “Caravan”
6. 4:10 – related to #2, but fast and perky: sax speeds over murky ensemble
7. 7:22 – free improvisation: rises from quiet percussion to spiritual beauty
8. 6:37 – uplifting folk-gospel tune: a friendly feel, then celebratory parade
9. 5:09 – corny old song actually kind of works as a second-line stomp
10. 5:20 – happy-go-lucky, sorta goofy riffing ditty, horns get loose
11. 5:24 – sax skronk and electronic swoops, settles into a sinister sound
12. 5:58 – darkly trippy, fractured horns/electronics over a fast beat
