Tony Trischka “Great Big World” Label: Rounder Records Joseph Reviewed 2/17/14 Eclectic mix of newgrassy songs and instrumentals, very similar in style to his “World Turning” album of two decades ago. Some good stuff here. 1 – (3:06) Say Goodbye* Fast breakdown with vocals, really fine. 2 – (3:11) Do Re Mi Good version of Woody Guthrie tune. 3 – (5:05) The Danny Thomas* Diverse mid-tempo instrumental, lots of twists and turns, really great. 4 – (3:20) Promontory Point* With Steve Martin on clawhammer & Tony on cello banjo. 5 – (7:13) Single String Medley* Medley of 5 segments of single-string picking, fun. 6 – (4:06) Belated Wedding Hoedown/Angelina Baker* Mid-up-tempo, Michael Daves & Aoifie O’Donovan share vocal duties. 7 – (3:16) Ocracoke Lullaby* Slow banjo with harp & cello, lovely. 8 – (7:07) Great Big World/Purple Trees of Colorado Rangy & inventive, w/Noam Pikelny. 9 – (3:30) Joy* Gospel shout, bit peculiar but phenomenal pedal steel playing. 10 – (3:29) I Wonder Where You Are Tonight Traditional bluegrass, just OK. 11 – (4:53) Lost Abigail Washburn adds vocals to this haunting melody. 12 – (5:10) Wild Bill Hickok Ramblin’ Jack Elliott & Mike Compton on vocals, abd John Goodman w/spoken word. Great Trischka original 13 – (2:40) Swag Bag Rag Just so-so. |
