Cupid Makes A Fool Of Me
Just Another Snake Cult—Cupid Makes a Fool of Me|
Review by Luis A. Apolaya
This psychedelic indie pop band hailing from Reykjavík, Iceland is weird, but it takes pride in its eccentricity. The duo sounds ambitious in its own way, like Arcade Fire did in its debut, and throughout the album one can feel a fun atmosphere and carefree attitude emanating from their songs. Recommended tracks: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10. RIYL Brian Wilson, Pulp, MGMT, early Arcade Fire, Broken Bells.
1. (2:03) Sounds like track 7 played backwards, could have fit somewhat nicely as part of a slowed-down version of the Beatles’ “Revolution 9”.
*2. (2:51) Electric guitar, synth, and auto-harp lead, happy feeling throughout, sounds like a track off of Pulp’s Different Class.
**3. (2:10) Multifaceted, makes use of different tempos and instruments every thirty seconds or so while maintaining a common melodic theme, pleasantly crazy.
*4. (3:13) Quirky and mid-tempo, also uses a number of different instruments and effects, finishes with a marimba solo.
*5. (5:11) Seemingly off-key (but still weirdly enjoyable) background melody, cello and vocals somehow fit with the sounds surrounding them, slows down slightly by the end.
**6. (4:28) Best track of the album, makes use of elements of 60s pop music (surf, baroque pop, early psychedelic, overall Beatlesque feel), a beautiful chaos.
7. (1:40) The melody of the first track played in an intelligible manner, instrumental, a bit eerie, but also hauntingly playful.
8. (1:47) Strange yet lively guitar and auto-harp intro with contrasting bass and falsetto vocals, shifts to jumpy tempo and finishes with a short synth solo.
*9. (5:24) Slow and melancholy, resonant percussion and cello, distant vocals have a lot of echo, finishes with a loud synth crescendo 11 seconds early.
*10. (6:45) Baritone vocals over a soft dub-like synth riff in a relaxed, reggae pace, cello comes in temporarily, then a synth crescendo takes over the track until it finishes 40 seconds early.
