RALPH ALESSI: Baida
ECM, 2013
POSTMODERN JAZZ – adventurous jazz trumpet at the head of a star collective: Jason Moran (piano), Drew Gress (bass), Nasheet Waits (drums). The echoey “ECM sound” is very much in play here, and the tunes gets knotty, balancing cerebral melodies and rhythmic drive, with a few improv diversions. It’s different, deep, and quite compelling.
All very good. Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 9
1. 5:25 – moody: atmospheric drums & trumpet squeaks, spare piano/bass
2. 7:36 – pulse/spiral: drums keep it moving, trumpet/piano in complex weave
3. 4:05 – simple jabbing pattern gains intensity; trumpet elaborates on top
4. 4:35 – odd rolling rhythm opens up for free improvisation in the middle
5. 4:47 – a solemn air: prominent bass, gently flowing trumpet, calm ensemble
6. 5:47 – carefully paced geometric lines, becomes a soft, elegant ballad
7. 4:45 – contrasting lines as all dance around each other; an abstract swing
8. 6:14 – sedate, precise tapestry; switch to piano/drum scribbles, stroll, return
9. 5:54 – distracted musing over low, circular bass & martial drums
10. 6:09 – trumpet stretch over drum rumble, tragic solo piano, stormy quartet
11. 3:32 – slow, somber ballad, a more approachable take on #1
