Rarities comp from famous Scottish popsters, compiling remixes, outtakes, B-sides, etc since 2002; no truly essential songs, but it should be interesting to fans. The band tries a new style on many of them, to varying degrees of success. Songs in their trademark style are generally a bit ordinary when compared to their best (being outtakes and all). Lots of organ and flute. Remixes 6 and 11 are well-done and good but likely polarizing; "indie" shows will love them, while others probably would be happier avoiding them. *1 (3:49) Remix of hit "I'm a Cuckoo" by the Avalanches. Goes for an African sound; accordian, pan flutes, chants, claps all feature. *2 (2:41) Smooth, synthy pop about a friend who wants to become a softcore porn model; full sound, very upbeat 3 (3:49) 60s tropical cocktail bar vibe; probably one to skip 4 (2:58) Blues-rocky guitar licks and piano lines; Stevie vox 5 (3:03) Close to the "B&S sound" and subject matter; midtempo, lots of folky organ, bits of flute and steel guitar *6 (5:58) Remix of dancy 2004 EP cut "Your Cover's Blown" by Miaoux Miaoux, made more dancy and slightly funky by tons of synths. 7 (3:34) Piano-led, country-rock melody, Stevie vox 8 (3:28) Sax features, fem vox, pleasant. Lyrics use mother/child love as metaphor for something worse 9 (2:48) Smoky piano lounge downtempo, Stevie vox 10 (4:00) Ska-influenced, spy movie feel, slightly cheesy lyrics about the humanity of people in the Israel/Palestine conflict *11 (3:49) Remix by Richard X; synthy, super dancy version of "I Didn't See it Coming" 12 (2:39) Whimsical, folky pop, Stevie vox 13 (4:07) Driving upbeat folk-rock (think Simon and Garfunkel on a ton of uppers), duo vox *14 (2:35) Surf-rock instrumental 15 (4:17) '03; midtempo, organ/piano/guitar- the sound you'd expect 16 (3:42) Strings feature, slow burner, their sound but not exceptional 17 (2:36) Calypso, Stevie, probably their worst song ever 18 (4:26) Piano, 50s slow dance pace, lyrics about kinky sex 19 (FCC? twat) (4:35) Upbeat; a couple short, happy organ parts interspersed with less happy vocals |
