ANDY HAAS & KEN ALDCROFT: Notes on the Miasms
Resonantmusic, 2013
AVANT-NOISE JAZZ – Duo of sax (+electronics on 1,3,6) and guitar, all music fully improvised. The pieces don’t develop very much; they’re more like paintings, exploring particular colors and textures, speeding without moving. It’s intense and uncomfortable, but without resorting to punching the listener in the face.
Fo’s Picks: 2, 4, 6
1. 8:58 – small overlapped scribblings, rolling logs, high squeals, ends quietly
2. 6:18 – sax scurries madly, guitar nudges the edge; they sync midway thru
3. 6:32 – guitar picks quickly thru woozy electronics & droning sax
4. 4:05 – a quieter, more organic piece, sax & guitar both feel calm & elastic
5. 13:40 – starts slow but soon speeds up: sax stretches & bends, then ties tight knots; guitar supports & prods insistently with short strokes
6. 8:14 – sax swoops & whirls as guitar percolates; light electronic accents
7. 4:04 – starts very quietly, gets dense, then hammers away thru 2nd half
