Don't Call Me Fabulous

Album Review

Hunx & His Punx shed some of the doowop tones of their previous work for a punky, punky vibe on this one, paying homage to punks spanning the mid 70s to mid 80s. Shannon of Shannon and the Clams is now a frontwoman and, in part because of that, this album features gritty, aggressive, yearning vox all over the never-too-serious songs that make up this album. Catchy, energetic, tracks are all over the place, and basically everything is a winner. Tons of gems here.

RIYL: Nobunny, Shannon and the Clams, Warm Soda, Sonny and the Sunsets, Ramones, Bad Brains

1 (1:25) FCC FUCK, what pop-punk coulda been, searing guitars, angry poppy vox, Bad Brainsy
2 (0:32) FCC PUSSY, FUCK, short ripping tune
**3 (1:35) Shannon vox, gritty, pissed off, perfect example of girl group meets punk formula
*4 (2:03) Gritty, nasty, sneering, grooving, poppy, sexy, puts other throwback bands to shame
*5 (1:45) Heavy, thumping, slamdancing, punk-pop perfection
***6 (1:56) Raspy Shannon kills this one, 50s lead/backing vox warped and fucked up; killer rhythm section and jarring, complemental guitar
7 (1:33) FCC FUCK SHIT, rocking, themes of alienation, anger, poppy, teenage, desperate
8 (0:27) Brief angry "don't call me fabulous" x 4
9 (1:56) 50s touch on the vox, alternates between hard-rock/punk; tons of crunch, whirring post-punky poppy bits
*10 (1:27) Riffy, great bassline, unintelligible vox, early Beastie Boys cover, why not play it
11 (1:52) Drums and solos control this one, well-balanced between art, classic rock, punk
12 (3:47) 50s teenage pop ballad meets post-punk dirge "it's not easy bein' me"
