Rough Guide to Psychedelic Bollywood Reviewed by Sadie O., 7/6/13 Psychedelic Bollywood – and trust me, Bollywood could get pretty damn pyschedelic before they decided to slavishly imitate Hollywood… Great comp – just what we’ve all been needing! Even the less-good stuff here is awesome. Caveat – calling the majority of CD “Psychedelic” is a real stretch. CD 1: 1. 7:30 ****uptempo psych guitar and psych vocals by top vocalists (and sisters) Lata and Asha. Some demented instrumental bits. Huge hit back in the day. 2. 2:38 ****chord! Scream! Spy movie sound with bongos, farfisa, hysterical laughter. Hooray for Bollywood! 3. 3:18 ***big jazz chord, extremely high female vocals, overly excited male panting… just plain strange, frankly. 4. 2:15 ***big drums in a traditional vein, part raga, part beatnik jazz party. 5. 2:51 **midtempo groovy swingy with flutes and lounge-y female scat singing. 6. 4:18 ****psyched-up keyboard intro, then uptempo, fraught, Blaxploitation groove with sweet female vocals (Asha was queen of psych singing!) 7. 4:03 **interpretive flute, uptempo bongo bop male vocals in English and scat. Bippity boppity chanting. Odd! 8. 2:12 ***uptempo boppy jazzy lounge-y thing with groovy sax, instrumental. Gets crazy fast with pysch guitar bits. 9. 3:11 ****psych sitar and tabla, seductive female vocals (guess who!) 10. 5:26 ***weird stuttering vocals, old-school mambo mixed with frenzy. Another huge hit from yesteryear. 11. 8:05 ****funky midtempo stomp, female sighs, bits of added sounds and instruments – it must have made sense with the video, I think… 12. 2:13 ***big horn squeal, then uptempo chunky lounge with fuzz guitars and bongos. Instrumental. 13. 5:51 ****disturbing (but jolly) male vocals and panting, uptempo bongo groove. Grotty farfisa, big horns. Freak out! 14. 3:22 ***uptempo fuzzy guitar and bongos, almost dubby. Freak out, indeed! Gets pretty Zapp-tastic. 15. 5:37 ****fast 60’s beach blanket pop sound – another huge hit, very catchy. CD 2: (R.D. Burman) 1. 5:25 ****downtempo swingy, Pink Panther feel, lounge-a-mambo. Breathy Asha vocals. Impressive rhythmic panting. Another huge hit. Vibes! 2. 4:36 ***really pretty sitar and tabla downtempo sway, male vocals. Hit. 3. 4:13 ****twist a gogo! I can totally see the Hullaballoo dancers here… 4. 2:58 **very groovy spy movie lounge with rooster impersonation. Switches to lovely acoustic guitar, male vocals (I liked the intro best...) 5. 6:05 *midtempo lilting waltz, pretty male vocals. Not particularly Psych… OK, there is an inexplicable bit of one horse open sleigh, but no Psych. 6. 4:48 ****bells and suspense… Rather Spanish-sounding guitar, sweet Asha vocals, huge oft-covered hit, complex and lovely tune. 7. 3:59 **kiddie vocals – very cute, and they actually hold a tune. Midtempo Bollypop. 8. 5:46 **male vocals, flute, very slow, rather bad sound quality. Slow sitar and tabla (and flute) blues. 9. 4:22 **jaunty old fashioned Bolly bounce, loopy vocals. 10. 4:52 ***midtempo sentimental sounding music with an Indian country beat, pretty vocals. Fairly bit hit, pleasant as mess. 11. 8:09 spoken dialog… I dunno, might be good if you speak Hindi… Ah, last of song is rather downtempo slightly Latin-tinged groove, male vocals. 12. 3:39 *****The ultimate classic of the genre (on several other comps) – Asha and pals make fine fun of American hippie tourists. Extremely catchy, midtempo with bongos and chorus, and Asha actually singing in an alto range part of the time! |
