COLL: Parallel Series 4 (Developer, Truncate)
Label: Mote Evolver
West Coast Techno at its best! Developer and Truncate hail from LA's underground, and this EP is strictly for the hardcore. No sunny bikini music here, no "daisy carnival" crap here. The beats are powerful and the gritty intensity rivals that of anything you'd hear from Detroit or Berlin, if not more so. Both Developer & Truncate have had mixes featured on KZSU's 2012 Winter Solstice Marathon, and I'm a huge fan of both of these guys. Every track on this EP is good, but especially look at #1 ("Random Attractions") & #4 ("Fourty Four").
1. "Random Attractions" (6:03): Sick pounding techno, with a deep dark bassy warble, and a wail-screech that echoes in the distance, recalling a medieval dragon's roar.
2. "Drive Themes" (6:20): Straightforward acidic techno with a nervous bounce to it. Rich and multilayered. Solid beats.
3. "Is it Skinny?" (6:15): Spooky looped female vocal sample asking the track's title question "Is it skinny?" and insistent synth loops. Unsettling - in a good way.
4. "Fourty Four" (5:22): Dancefloor banger with a deep and intense bassline. Strong buildups with walls of noise and well-timed claps.
