This album is a mix of hoedown jams, melancholy acoustic crooning and just plain raw, huge vocals and guitar-driven highs. Lisa LeBlanc sings almost entirely in French, but occasionally throws in words like “crazy-glue” and “whisky” in a thick French accent, which I guess don’t have French equivalents. Her voice is the main driver here, and she has a huge range, from a country/bluegrass twang to an almost operatic richness. The tracks frequently build up from slow or minimal beginnings and have a bit of an aggressive/femme empowerment edginess. The forceful vocals and clear blues-y/folk roots reminded me a lot of Wye Oak. FCCs in French on 13 (“merde”=shit). Try 1, 4, 8, 10.
1. (2:42)** Fast paced, big, foot-stompin beat, strong, aggressive female vocals, slightly minor banjo and acoustic guitar, ends abruptly
2. (2:28) More of a country feel, banjo solo opening, vocals have a bit of a twang, deliberate percussion
3. (3:56) Slightly lighter, upbeat, whimsical feel in opening, builds with forceful chorus
4. (3:14)* Solo acoustic guitar with beautiful, raw, exposed vocals, slower, nostalgic, whistling solo
5. (3:50) Minor groove, rich, big vocals, veer from husky Carla Bruni-esque to growling/belting, feels very Wye Oak, fades out
6. (3:50) Returns to hoedown, vocals super twangy, she sings “cowboy” and “whisky” with a strong French accent
7. (2:16) Dosey doe, upbeat barn dance with quick, spoken lyrics, chorus jams out, great banjo
8. (5:04)** Very melodic, builds up from a mellow, bit of a flamenco feel to a huge, guitar driven wall of sound with soaring vocals, again very Wye Oak
9. (2:56)* Bluegrass, lots of hand-clapping, strong banjo, mid-tempo, heavy beat, jazzy piano, ends abruptly
