FRED LONBERG-HOLM’S FAST CITIZENS: Gather
Delmark, 2012
AVANT-GARDE – Lively, unique sextet out of Chicago mixes up wild free improv with bop energy and some hard-swinging rhythms. Lonberg-Holm plays cello, tenor guitar, and cornet (actually, every member of the band plays either trumpet or cornet as a second instrument!) These pieces refuse to sit still, shifting tempo, texture and mood midstream in unpredictable but always interesting ways. Solid.
Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 4, 6
1. 12:14 – 1st half is a goofy bounce: lumpy swing under solos; speeds up into white-hot free skronk w/harsh cello, falls apart, spins at the end.
2. 9:19 – creaky improv intro; slow sextet trudge; 2nd half is all weird geometry
3. 8:16 – catchy groove splinters under pressure, turns to blippy space-improv
4. 9:39 – slow waves of resonant harmony, gradually becomes a sneaky stroll
5. 9:27 – thick bubbling improv stew; opens up & slows down, chugs to finish
6. 10:26 – neato “backwards” guitar sound sets up relaxed but knotty solos, gets faster/more thorny as it goes along
7. 10:20 – switches up frequently: droning trumpet choir, perky bounce, near-silent improv, undulating waves, long drum solo brings it home
