King Kohn - What The Folk? Folk-Rock theatrical weirdness - Guitar, Piano, Drums, some other stuff. Goat-voiced Austin-based bodybuilder turned singer-songwriter has released three albums since 2011. Like Mojo Nixon without the novelty lyrics or Wesley Willis without the Casio. Most songs sound relatively similar, excepting track 1, and many have a death theme. One gets the feeling King Kohn is wrestling with life. FCC Clean (though I wouldn’t play track 1 outside safe harbor) Faves: 1, 14 ~eme o.
1. Voice soundscape consisting of the phrase “what the folk”. Sounds dangerously close to that other WTF phrase. Didgeridoo, Rain Stick
2. Kind of like a sea shanty, with demonic laughter, about finding inner peace, sort of. “Annihilate your anger, cancel your strife, dance with the dead.” Guitar, Drums
3. Jaunty love ballad, with female vocal accompaniment, about holding love close while you lay dying. Girl vocals get a little porn-moany near the end. Rockin’ Electric Guitar Solos
4. Folk-punk song about sitting at home in your favorite jeans, drinking beer, and watching tv. Guitar, Drums
5. Mid-tempo song about the unattainable life-affirming love of a dark-haired beauty. Acoustic Guitar
6. Like Indie meets something that would like to be Death Rock. Wishes an old man could see his point of view.. Acoustic and Electric Guitars
7. “Hold me tight through the night, tell me I’m beautiful again” He growls, he whispers, he seeks assurance from a disembodied female voice. Piano tinkles and thunders.
8. Cheerful tune that’s kind of an ‘eff you’ to his haters. “I can always sing my heart out to three deers two dogs and a duck.” Ends with a female voice telling him to leave the duck alone, Guitar, Drums
9. Down-tempo “Help comes when you need it the least” Acoustic Guitar
10. Peppy up-tempo post-breakup tune about having nothing to lose anymore. Electric guitar makes a cameo toward the end. Acoustic Guitar, Drums
11. Growling turns to whispers as he sings about reaching a moment where one can love again..Ends with a decisive strum. Acoustic Guitar
12. Anti-war song. Music’s not bad here, lyrics are growled, whispered, and spoken. Electric Guitar plays a nice part in the background
13. Down-tempo, as the title might suggest. Lyrics are sung-whispered and blared. Acoustic Guitar
14. “Just a simple man with a voice and a dream... I hope my words will meet you someday.” Jaunty Piano turns tantrumy at the end
