A noble idea -- a song-for-song cover of the original LA-fueled soundtrack to Alex Cox's "Repo Man" -- but too many FCCs and misfires for our purposes. I have fond memories of the movie (Emilio Estevez, Harry Dean Stanton) and a mall-purchased cassette from high school, but this compilation just fires wide of the mark in most cases. Do yourself a favor and check out the original while sampling this.
FCCs: 1, 6, 8, 10
1. Those Darlins, "Repo Man" (orig. Iggy Pop) - FCC (pissing, fucked, fucking), med, metallic (but not metal) rock, female vox aping Penelope Houston mimicking Iggy
2. Polar Bear Club, "TV Party" (orig. Black Flag) - up, super faithful cover, may as well be Black Flag except for the male lead singer (def. not Rollins), false end
3. * Amanda Palmer & The Grand Theft Orchestra, "Institutionalized" (orig. Suicidal Tendencies) - varies btw. med- and up, Amanda does a great job with the Mike Muir protagonist role, horns give it a jazzy feel in the verses, spoken quick end
4. New York Rivals, "Coup D'Etat" (orig. Circle Jerks) - med(+), way overproduced yowling male vox over 80s cock rock, kind of a trainwreck (and not in a good way)
5. Black Francis & Spanish for Hitchhiking, "El Clavo y La Cruz" (orig. The Plugz) - med-, low-key, Black Francis (ex-Pixies) retains the original Spanish
6. The Tellers, "Pablo Picasso" (orig. Jonathan Richman, performed by Burning Sensations) - FCC ("asshole" x 10? 20?), med, really not worth your time (unlike JoJo's original)
7. Mike Watt & The Secondmen, "Let's Have a War" (orig. Fear) - possibly offensive ("let's give guns to the queers"), med, proto-grindcore with a groove chorus and Hammond organ(?!)
8. The Suicide Dolls, "When the Shit Hits the Fan" (orig. Circle Jerks) - FCC (duh - song title = chorus), med(-), flaccid rock that sometimes works
9. Matthew Sweet, "Hombre Secreto" (orig. Johnny Rivers, performed by The Plugz) - med, double cover (of Johnny Rivers' "Secret Agent Man"), Sweet's vox sound phonetically rendered (instead of actually knowing Spanish)
10. Moses Coltrane, "Bad Man " (orig. Juicy Bananas) - FCC (shit x 2, bullshit, offensive commentary on women, etc.), dn -, modelled on an old school spoken R&B jam
11. * Weekend, "Reel Ten" (orig. The Plugz) - dn, instrumental, the shimmering synth sound of the magic car blasting off into space
