Nima Khak: Searching All Around EP Label: 1:53.2 Records
Apparently Nima Khak is known more for his techno work, but you can barely tell here. 1:53.2 is a Stockholm-based electronica label that's an offshoot of an awesome underground techno club called 2.35:1. Nima's EP isn't all slammin' techno, it's more laid back, and the techno framework is minimized so that there's more room for thoughtful exploration & experimentation. A very nice release - the best track on the EP are #1 (house-y) & #3 (abstract), while #4 is also good but a little long.
1. 6:53 "Searching All Around" - Stripped-down soulful tech-house with a simple vocal loop and thumpy beats, as a neat little shimmery tone reverberates
2. 5:51 "Bitter Sweet" - Super-spacey dubbed-out stripped down track, chill-out stoner beats for sure
3. 5:13 "A Tribe Called Quest" - Rumbles & crackles like thunder & lightning, an insistent synth tone, and a barely-there techno framework. Interesting and abstract.
4. 10:01 "Frogs" - A long and meandering track. The beats aren't too heavy and the there's a lovely harp/string-like melody over textured crackles & ambience.
