JOEY DEFRANCESCO: Wonderful! Wonderful!
HighNote, 2012

ORGAN JAZZ – One of the brightest stars of the Hammond B-3 over the past few decades, “Joey D” keeps the flame burning with straight-up groovers like this disc, playing with a hard, chunky swing. He’s joined by two veterans this time: fusion guitarist Larry Coryell (here playing in a “cool” style) and bop drummer Jimmy Cobb. They have good rapport. Nothing spectacular here, but a solid effort.

Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 5, 6, 8

1. 7:08 – soulful theme dives into a speedy bop romp
2. 6:02 – hardbop strut: sneaky guitar solo and slippery B3
3. 8:47 – cute “western” ditty gets playfully swinging treatment, long solo lines
4. 7:13 – dragging romantic ballad with finely detailed solos, esp. guitar
5. 8:50 – elaborate organ intro, then a cool breezy waltz; nice sound
6. 6:37 – a cool, quiet stroll with a little blues in it, has a real nice feel
7. 5:23 – Joey plays trumpet! A sweet ballad, nothing too fancy
8. 8:21 – yeah… straightahead groove lets guitar & organ dig in
