ERI YAMAMOTO TRIO: The Next Page
AUM Fidelity, 2012
MODERN JAZZ – Another album of aching beauty and sparkling joy from pianist Yamamoto. Her music can be fragile or soaring, but it’s always good-natured with sing-song melodies and an effortless flow. All tracks are original, with a “set break” midway through as a nod to her long-running gig at Arthur’s Tavern in Greenwich Village.
All good. Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 4, 5, 11, 12
1. 6:30 – a soft, chilly pulse; then a simple melody full of warmth & happiness
2. 6:46 – serene start; a gentle stroll through the woods, with rises and falls
3. 7:56 – circular bassline: cool walking rhythm; sneaky/playful piano & drums
4. 6:04 – hushed after-hours drag: abstracted bluesiness, nice bass solo too
5. 5:43 – very cheerful little stroll: a quiet but unshakeable optimism
6. 5:55 – tiptoes carefully: mostly gentle trio interweavings
8. 7:57 – little rising/falling riffs in shifting tempo; drums roll and creep forward
9. 6:11 – quiet contemplation and a pleasant sway: bass looks deep within
10. 5:40 – cute melody with a snappy little beat, solos have a bit of a strut
11. 5:15 – relaxed, lovely daydream with an almost bittersweet air
12. 5:35 – happy drums and a carefree melody; solo darts and weaves
