Godfathers’ of psyche pop latest takes their polished sound even closer to that of Pavement or The Flaming Lips than what we have been touting lately as “new psyche”, or even how they started as Spacemen 3. Heavily dosed with string arrangements, almost to a “cinematic” quality. There is even “girl backups” in this. What next, brass? Don’t expect much resembling “psyche” that we keep labeling bands like Wooden Shijps, but there are moments (e.g track 6). These guys just keep at it, thank god.
1) (1:01) orchestral cinematic brief “intro”
2) (8:52) bouncy, retro pop feel, midway it falls apart into a cacophony, then a false ending (careful) and it builds up slow again back to its glory
3) (3:40) morose pop song, pavement?
4) (6:47) dramatic swaying, soaring
5) (3:45) simple swaying enjoying pop song
6) (8:23) fuzzy psyche guitars and krautrockisms pushing toward the surface that is smothered by the popisms
7) (4:32) simple ballad
8) (4:37) some fuzzy guitar and a funky hand-clap feel with the “girl backup vocs” in the chorus makes this cool
9) (6:12) slow swaying, epic feel
10) (4:03) “jesus wont you be my radio”, almost sounds like a drinking song or church song in its rhyming simplicity, nice
11) (7:52) a simple one minute intro is followed by probably the “hit” on this cd (got a lot of play on kalx recently): simple swaying with organ, another call to jesus, but then about 2/3 the way in it kicks into this epic hook/theme that repeats and repeats and turns into an ear-worm to the end, ouch! But if youre looking for the most epic ultimate track on the cd, here it is
