JOHN BROWN: Quiet Time Brown Boulevard, 2012 MAINSTREAM JAZZ – Bassist John Brown gives us a sweet ballads ‘n’ blues album in the classic style, with a smoky after-midnight sound. The bluesy tracks are just perfect, especially when saxophonist Brian Miller is out front. The straight-up ballads, however, tend to drippiness. Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 5, 6, 8 1. 6:06 – slow and bluesy: soulful sax slides all over the melody 2. 5:42 – slow ballad mope: tender flugelhorn & sax, careful piano 3. 9:02 – slow: spiritual intro slips into a film-noir blues creep; fine sax solo 4. 7:44 – soft ballad: flugelhorn leads, very sentimental sound 5. 8:39 – gentle Japanese melody, sweet groove, blossoms in the horn solos 6. 7:44 – slow, smoky standard: closing time at the bar… very nice bass solo 7. 8:13 – achingly slow ballad (Barry Manilow!), lifeless except for sax solo 8. 8:08 – oooh… very slow blue ballad; the total beauty of it sneaks up on you 9. 6:38 – serene ballad, a suspended moment, very deliberate pacing 10. 6:49 – James Taylor ballad: sax gives it a soulful feel [ Fo ] - February 2012 |
