MCCOY TYNER: Quartet
Half Note, 2007

POWERHOUSE POSTBOP – Yippee! Tyner, still a leading light of modern jazz, joined with three other star players last year for this spirited New Year’s Eve gig over at Yoshi’s in Oakland. The set surprisingly includes three tunes from his brilliant 1967 album The Real McCoy, along with some choice ‘70s material. Everybody is in top form and merged into a seamless unit, helping to make this McCoy’s best disc in years and an easy top-10 pick for mainstream jazz in 2007.

All tracks great! Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 4, 5

1. 9:31 – chant-like theme, catchy bassline; very strong spiritually-edged solos
2. 9:51 – midtempo stomp: sax digs in, agile bass, triumphant piano & drums
3. 12:22 – serious chant-like theme, elaborate solos make it an exotic fantasy
4. 11:21 – bright, peppy tune: boppin’ sax, quick bass, crashing piano
5. 11:01 – relaxed ballad, no sappiness: strong, thoughtful solos all around
6. 9:47 – swinging, bluesy tune: heavy bass, honking sax, huge piano
7. 3:04 – ornate piano solo, lots of big, colliding chords; band introduction
