Album Review

The Budos Band "The Budos Band" – Afrobeat and soul inspired instrumental funk from some kids on Staten Island. Damn!! Great rhythm section in the bass, guitar, and organ. The amazing horn section includes trumpets, sax, and sometimes flute, and the percussion is top notch using drums, bongos, congas, clave, and a lot more. You can hear the Fela Kuti sound in there, but they definitely cultivate their own unique vibe using straight ahead funk, soul, and latin sounds too. They certainly live up to the Daptone label which has brought us some of the best funk in recent years. Every song on here is great. This will make a good soundbed (all instrumentals), but it really deserves to be played on its own. You will not be disappointed. PLAY IT NOW!!!
My Picks: 1, 3, 7, 8, 10

1)Nice bass line starts it off and then a bunch of percussion comes in. Solid midtempo beat and finally the afrobeat horns kick in. Rhythmic organ and guitar keep the beat chugging along while the horns lay some nice sounds on top.
2)Quiet trumpet noodles for a bit and then guitar comes in with some percussion for a slower laid-back beat. Hypnotic organ with some great horns. Fades out a bit and then ends abruptly.
3)Uptempo soul-funk with high energy. Still has an afrobeat feel to it. Fun dance number.
4)Solid midtempo groover. A little more soul inspired, and a little less afrobeat. Laid-back with some sweet rhythmic guitar and low horns. Great percussion layers too.
5)Slower laid-back midtempo. Percussion and bass line keep it going with horn hits on top and some guitar in the background. It almost has a bit of an island or latin feel.
6)Great cover of “Sing a Simple Song” that has way more instruments, especially in the percussion section. The layering in here is great. Solid midtempo (a little slower than the original, but not much).
7)Midtempo afrobeat with some psych wah-wah guitar and flute (I think). Solid funky groove that is laid-back. Dirty flute solo along with some other trumpet and sax work.
8)Solid faster midtempo groove with a bit more straight ahead funk sound. Oooo – nice organ taking the lead here. Fun and happy sounding.
9)Background talking/noise starts it off and then the drums and bass come in. Laid-back midtempo groove. Dirty flute with some echo effect on it. Has a trippy spacey feel.
10)Faster midtempo afrobeat with nice rhythm organ and guitar. Fun horn hits and a nice trumpet solo. Driving forceful beat that never really stops building until it fades out.
11)Slower dragging midtempo. Afrobeat sound that keeps a nice groove with great solo horns on top. Somewhat hypnotic.
