ELIADES OCHOA – Estoy Como Nunca
Higher Octave, 2002

CUBA – This understated gem of an album is destined for the top of the CMJ world chart and actually deserves to be there. Ochoa’s acoustic guitar is warm and personal, his singing unpolished but charming. He plays here alongside the Cuarteto Patria, the group he has led since 1978. Listen for guest spots by Raul Malo (vocal, #3), David Hidalgo (guitar, #1), and Anibal Avila (trumpet). Recorded in Los Angeles.

PLAY ANY TRACK. Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 4, 8, 9, 11

01. 5:01 – upbeat tropical groove; very happy w/good vocal, solos for guitars and bass
02. 4:52 – perky, with back & forth vocal, relaxed guitar solo, some rhythmic shifts early on
03. 5:22 – Yes! Very nice duet vocal with Malo; upbeat but sexy with a few trumpet stings
04. 4:26 – excellent instrumental version of “Siboney,” with a Spanish/cowboy sound.
05. 4:18 – churning rhythm, multitracked trumpets, very good guitar solo
06. 3:16 – relaxed ballad, straightforward with fine guitar backing & nice trumpet solo
07. 4:08 – loping rhythm, Mexican sound, strong vocal (nice rolling “R”s)
08. 5:49 – midtempo, good for a hot night: sultry guitars, clave beat and wide-open vox
09. 3:51 – optimistic and loose, lots of space for guitar, mostly instrumental + cute vocal riff
10. 4:28 – in the same vein as track 5, with more trumpet and a more interesting vocal
11. 3:14 – low-key ballad: solo guitar + vocal, sad and intimate
