– General Description: The Landscape Scrolls (2010-2011), by composer Peter Garland, depicts the day’s 24-hour cycle in five movements. It was commissioned by (and is dedicated to) percussionist John Lane and was influenced by Indian ragas, Japanese haiku poetry, and the famous ‘Landscape Scroll of the Four Seasons’ by Sesshu (a 15th century Japanese painter). Performing solo, Garland uses a limited array of instruments with each of the five movements being a monochromatic study, exploring resonance and space (as opposed to focusing on melody or harmony): Mid-Day (Chinese drums), Sunset (rice bowls), After Dark (triangles), Late (glockenspiel), Early Morning (tubular bells).

This is an excellent work and if you can play it in its entirety, you would be doing yourself and your listeners a favor. Each track is a gem.

– Track Reviews:

1. (10:20) I. Mid-Day - comfortable low-key very clear solo percussion piece of Chinese drums
2. (5:27) II. Sunset - refreshing and quick xylophone-like tinkling of rice bowls, climbing and falling
3. (10:30) III. After Dark - graceful sounds of various triangles, lots of overtones, it shimmers with a constant drone (acting as a soundbed) created by the overtones that are in agreement with each other
4. (4:14) IV. Late - lively glockenspiel dancing across space; swirling crystals of beautiful tones
5. (19:50) V. Early Morning - dignified tubular bells sounding in spurts, with the expanding sounds flowing and rippling together as their vibrations decay
