Album Review
Your Imaginary Friend
Reviewed 2018-08-08
Singer songwriter funk, with blues, afro injections. Along lines of Michael Franti, Shel Silversteen, Dr John, Gil Scott Heron. A re-release, this was originally put out in 1999 and reputed to be the lost recordings of an obscure artist from the early 70’s who spent time in mental institutions and was eventually killed by a bus in 1977. Great story but the reality is its John Lurie (the excellent tight recording and mastering belies its not some poor dude from the 70’s, no way).

1)* (3:31) slow piano/harmonica blues with him making dog sounds, lyrics are sexual innuendo, double entendres up the dogs butt 2) (5:50) afro/carribeo ethiopiques feel with loopy guitars and kalimba type rhythms, a story about driving through the farmland “in a small car driving”, childlike awe pleasantry 3) (3:49) slow fu-u-un-kay! 4)* (4:05) strange, tom waits bizarre disjunct elements, cool 4) (3:42) cool funky rock 5) (4:34) chill feel, cool song, “she didn’t make me pancakes”, groovy about a cute girl we’ve all known 6) (3:35) full on funky fun 7) (3:36) chill funk again, super cool with vibes 8) (4:51) afro feel returns slightly with the funk, brass, epic 9) (3:26) minimal blues piano with a harmonic wah wah and subdued vocs, cool stuff man, all cool 10)* (2:45) bad assed funk, led by the bass, all barrels 11) (3:14) backporch blues feel with mouth harp, minimal percussion and feel 12) (1:41) playful childlike stuff, heres the Shel Silversteen stuff 13)* (3:07) lovely simple acoustic carribeo lush tones, saved the best for last did you, sings about being childless, being orphaned
