STRAIGHT AHEAD JAZZ COMBO

Michael Zilber is saxophonist, composer, and leader here. He plays both tenor and soprano saxes. Accompaniment is piano, bass, and drums. The set is eleven original compositions, each named for and styled after a notable jazz saxophonist.

All instrumental. No FCC issues.

1 ** Very fast. Much spirit & energy. Led by tenor sax. Powerful drums. (5:57)
2 Mid-slow. Rhythm section starts. Gentle melody on tenor. Bass & piano solos. (6:20)
3 Mid-fast. Fractured melody has hints of Sonny’s “St Thomas.” Drum solo. (4:22)
4 * Mid-slow. Dreamy melody on sopr sax; long piano break; lots of bass too. (6:56)
5 ** Fast. High energy; very rhymic. Lead on soprano sax. (5:12)
6 Mid-slow. Easy, legato melody on tenor sax. Gentle & peaceful. Restrained ‘comp. (4:58)
7 Mid-fast & snappy. Melody on tenor sax. Piano break in middle. (5:31)
8 * Very slow, very laid back. Again on tenor sax. Moody & elegant. (5:39)
9 Very fast. Sopr sax & piano trade solos with breakneck speed. Technical & showy. (7:15)
10 * Mid-tempo. Drums start; piano & bass join; then tenor sax. Melodic & rhythmic.(6:57)
11 Very slow. Late night ballad on soprano sax. Quiet, minimal accompaniment. (10:49)
