Mozart’s Symphonies No. 40 and 41 were composed amidst disasters – his attempts to find permanent employment failed, pupils no longer sought him out, publishers took advantage of him, the Viennese public lost interest in his works, the premieres of his operas failed, his wife fell ill and his child died. The Symphony No. 40 in G minor is one of the 18th cent.’s most tragic works, but unfolds with continuous beauty. The 1st mvmt melody is a lyrical, tender lamentation. The 2nd mvmt radiates reflective sadness. The 3rd mvmt expresses energetic attempts to overcome adversity with purposeful resolve, including a courtly Minuet in the mvmt’s middle. The 4th mvmt voices sadness in passionate outbursts and declamations, never losing majesty and attractiveness. Symphony No 41 in C major, “Jupiter,” combines the serious and the comic, strength and weakness, virility and tenderness. The 1st mvmt opening theme is heroic, the 2nd theme a love duet between cellos and violins, after which a threatening presence arrives, followed by a comic actor. The characters then interact throughout the mvmt. The 2nd mvmt recounts a sad tale of defeat and loss. The 3rd mvmt theme blossoms into a refined, intoxicating minuet. The majesty of the 4th mvmt reflects the title, “Jupiter.”
