Break up music for artsy dudes. If you missed the memo, don’t date your bandmate. To keep it short, Dave Longstreth and Amber Coffman broke up in 2012, and Longstreth did not handle it well. Becoming the Taylor Swift of the Urban Styles crowd, he decided to take out his feelings in new music. Unlike TSwift’s approach of writing a nasty song or two, Longstreth wrote a whole f*cking album. And it’s not bad. Sprawling tracks laced with heartbreak and anguish, it’s certainly not an easy listen, but many of the songs are worth it.

Genre: Kooky art pop, vanguard 2000s indie rock
RIYL: 808s and Heartbreaks, New Bon Iver, Vampire Weekend
FCCs: 1, 3
Favorite Tracks: 2, 3, 6, 8
Keep Your Name (4:30) FCC sh*t - Hurting, sad, yet artful build to song, kooky vocal loops, pace change at 2:25
Death Spiral (5:08)* - Cool, brooding, electric guitars add hard edges, dramatic lyrics, plane crash metaphor
Up in Hudson (7:30)** FCC ass - Amazing track, all sorts of textures and feelings, a journey
Work Together - (4:23) Upbeat, weird, all sorts of chopped vocals, pitched up portions, interesting
Little Bubble (5:05) - slow sad, pretty strings and piano, closest thing to a ballad here
Winner Take Nothing (4:49)* - sad lyrics contrasted by more hopeful composition
Ascent Through the Clouds (6:55) - Lush strings start to build and warp, total shift at 2:50, groovy beat appears, cool close
Cool Your Heart (3:49)** - Wacky tropical keys and beats, sweet Dawn Richard feature
I See You (6:05) - Upbeat, putting the pieces back together, the make up after the break up
