“The Order of Time” Valerie June

June hails from Memphis, Tennessee and her roots lie in the gospel music of her childhood. Her fame exploded in 2013 with her breakout album Pushin' Against a Stone. Thus, her new album is 4 years in the making. All her songs have some aspect of time explored. The eclectic mix of jazzy, country, and gospel feels in this album epitomizes her desire to "blur the lines between genres and eras of sounds.” This is also apparent by her concert venues; she has performed everywhere, from Carnegie Hall to Outside Lands to the White House, by Michelle Obama’s invitation.

Recommended: 12, 6, 7. No FCCs.

1) (3:56) Long Lonely Road — airy, whimsical vocals over little instrumentation, gradually incorporates slow drumming, pretty harmonization, long fade out
2) (3:37) Love You Once Made — horns and organs, some country twangy guitar, bluesy keyboard
3) (2:46) Shake Down — more upbeat, tambourine keeping the beat, sudden electric guitar solo! backup vocals by her brothers and father
4) (3:31) If And — beautiful harmonies, repetitive
5) (3:07) Man Done Wrong — starts off with some scatting/riffing, country feel, banjo riff
6) * (4:15) The Front Door — slow, spacey, twinkly
7) * (3:39) Astral Plane — echoey vocals, very slow, lots of sounds at once
8) (3:51) Just In Time — a serene, hopeful sound, pretty violin
9) (2:43) With You — airy, multiple layered voices, out-of-sync instruments layering
10) (4:04) Slip Slide On By — jazzy piano chords and bass, trumpets come in, short pauses throughout
11) (3:53) Two Hearts — guitar and vocals complementing one another, keyboard supporting sound
12) ** (4:13) Got Soul — jazzy opening, more upbeat, gospel-like chorus echoes, country fiddle
