Italian grace and charm pervade the Divertimento in F Major, which Mozart (1756-1791) composed at age 15, having returned from Italy, where he absorbed new styles and ideas. The dreamlike melody of the Andante from Piano Concerto No. 21 became the theme for the tragic 1967 Swedish film, Elvira Madigan. The Serenade No. 4 was written for end-of-term celebration by the philosophy students at U. of Salzburg and the Menuetto is light-hearted. The Rondo alla Turca, one of M’s most popular pieces, imitates the sound of Turkish Janissary bands. The Piano Concerto No. 23 Allegro blends quiet serenity with wistfulness. The Violin Concerto No. 5 Adagio expresses quiet grace and introspection. The upbeat theme of the A Little Night Music Allegro will be instantly recognized and welcome. The Symphony No. 40 Andante is lyrical. The Piano Concerto No. 20 Romance has a lyrical, passionate, tender and romantic melody. The Molto Allegro from Symphony No. 41, “Jupiter,” Mozart’s last symphony, is a towering fugue ending “the greatest orchestral work of the world before the French Revolution.” (Sir George Grove).
